Community Bookshelf
A book-sharing app I built and run for a school community: scan a barcode to add a book, then lend and borrow across the school. Clean book data, search that understands what you mean, and a lending flow that tracks who has what.
Community Bookshelf grew out of a simple problem at my children's school: lots of books, and no easy way for families to share them. I built it so a parent can add a book in seconds by scanning its barcode, and other families can see what is available, borrow it, and return it, without anyone keeping a spreadsheet.
Behind that simple surface, it does the boring parts properly. Book details are filled in automatically from the barcode and tidied up by AI, so records are good without manual typing. Search understands what you actually mean, not just exact words, so it is easy to find the right read for a particular child. Families are grouped into households, the school is a community, and the lending flow tracks who has what, with email reminders. Signing in is a single tap on an emailed link, because busy parents will not manage passwords.
It is deliberately simple to run and cheap to keep going, which is the point: full functionality without a heavy system to maintain. It is real software, used by real families, that I keep running. A lot of how I think about building with AI comes from products like this, and it is why my advice stays grounded in software that is actually in production. It is live at communitybookshelf.uk.
